What SEBI asks, verbatim

Water withdrawal, consumption, and discharge in areas of water stress (in kilolitres)

For each facility/plant in areas of water stress: Name of area, Nature of operations, Water withdrawal by source (Surface/Ground/Third party/Seawater/Others), Total withdrawal, Total consumption, Water intensity per rupee of turnover, Water intensity (optional). Water discharge by destination and treatment level (same structure as P6-E4). Areas of water stress = inability to meet human/ecological demand, or classified as over-exploited/critical by Central Groundwater Board.

Quoted from the SEBI BRSR Format as amended March 2025, with measurement guidance from the ICAI Background Material on BRSR, Revised Edition 2024, page 140.

In plain English

The company must report how much water it pulls out, uses, and sends away in places where water is scarce, measured in kilolitres. For each plant in a water‑stress area, it should list the area name, what the plant does, the sources of water it draws (surface, ground, third‑party, seawater, or other), the total amount withdrawn, the total amount actually used, and the water used per rupee of sales. It should also give the amount of water discharged, where it goes, and how it is treated. The data usually comes from the company’s internal water‑management records and site‑level monitoring.

What a complete, assurance-ready answer contains

A complete, assurance‑ready answer lists every facility in a water‑stress area, giving the area name, operation type, and a breakdown of withdrawal by source (surface, groundwater, third‑party, seawater, others). It then provides the total withdrawal, total consumption, and the water intensity per rupee of turnover, with optional water intensity per unit of output, followed by a discharge table that mirrors the withdrawal structure, showing destination and treatment level for each discharge stream. Assurers look for source‑level granularity, a clear linkage between withdrawal and consumption, and a discharge treatment matrix; a common gap is omitting the treatment level for one or more discharge destinations.

Describes the completeness and granularity an assurer expects. No company figures are named.

Where the data comes from

Usually found in utility bills, meter readings and fuel logs. Forward to your plant or energy manager.

Much of what BRSR asks for already exists in filings the company makes elsewhere, such as Pollution Control Board consents, PAT returns, hazardous-waste manifests and EPR registrations. The free gap analysis cross-references those filings against all 108 fields and shows which are already covered.

Frequently asked questions

What does BRSR P6-L1 ask for?

The company must report how much water it pulls out, uses, and sends away in places where water is scarce, measured in kilolitres. For each plant in a water‑stress area, it should list the area name, what the plant does, the sources of water it draws (surface, ground, third‑party, seawater, or other), the total amount withdrawn, the total amount actually used, and the water used per rupee of sales. It should also give the amount of water discharged, where it goes, and how it is treated. The data usually comes from the company’s internal water‑management records and site‑level monitoring.

Is BRSR P6-L1 an Essential or a Leadership indicator?

P6-L1 is a Leadership indicator, so it is voluntary. Leadership indicators apply to companies that have been filing BRSR for three or more years, or that are in the top 1000 listed companies. A first-time filer can leave it out.

Who inside the company holds the data for P6-L1?

Plant / EHS / Energy. Usually found in utility bills, meter readings and fuel logs. Forward to your plant or energy manager.

What unit does P6-L1 use?

kilolitres / ratio. Reporting in the wrong unit, or switching the denominator of an intensity ratio between years, is one of the more common reasons a figure has to be restated.

What does a complete answer to P6-L1 look like?
